Lost Sierra Iris Garden is a hobby garden of bearded Iris located in the tiny town of Clio, California (population 89 people and 65 dogs). The garden sits at the edge of the Mohawk Valley in Plumas County at 4,500' elevation. We are surrounded on all sides by 7-8,000' peaks. The Middle Fork of the Feather River runs through the valley. The garden started many years ago when we left the rat race in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Being a lover of beautiful flowers, it didn't take me long to figure out that what would grow in Southern California, would not grow here. I was searching for plants that could (a) Stand up to -10 degree winters; (b) Were deer resistant; (c) Would tolerate less than perfect soil; and (d) Had beautiful flowers. When a relative gifted me with some iris plants, it soon became obvious that these were just what I needed! Well, 5 plants became 350 plants over time and as we all know, they grow and spread and need to be dug up and divided. What to do with all of those "extras"? At first they were being given away, then came selling to locals, then I discovered the iris groups on Face Book. So now here we are building a website (again!). I hope you enjoy your virtual visit! |
